The elegant art-deco decor recalls the days of luxury liners like the Queen Mary, which was built in the Clyde shipyards when the restaurant opened in the 1930s. Downstairs, Cafe Rogano serves lighter, less expensive meals, as does the cocktail bar. Both are open daily for lunch and dinner.

The cavernous surroundings are cluttered and the tables are pressed close together, so this is not really the place for an intimate dinner, but the food is authentic, with all of the classic dishes on an extensive menu. If you like seafood, try the wonderfully fresh and piquant pasta vongole (with small clams). Finish off with the light, creamy tiramisu. Note that the service can be a bit leisurely.

Where the Monkey Sleeps
